Strengthening the Links in the Chain

Enhancing sustainability performance

An important means thereby are workshops conducted with and individual coaching provided to hoteliers in the destinations. Kuoni Group brings together local experts and practitioners in the fields of social and environmental hotel management and thus contributes to hoteliers’ increased awareness of sustainability aspects as well as providing them with concrete measures that will enhance the sustainability of their business and activities. Hotel partners also learn about other benefits of sustainability management for their business, such as cost reduction, improved service quality and employee satisfaction. They are given a platform to exchange experiences among each other at a local and international level.

In partnership with the Travel Foundation Kuoni Group carried out the Towards Travelife project in 2013. The project provided bespoke mentoring support to four participating Kuoni Group partner hotels in Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura over an 11 month period, with the aim to increase their capacity and motivation to work towards a Travelife award - a sustainability management system and international certification scheme. Furthermore, the project aimed to identify obstacles and opportunities for hotels gaining Travelife certification and implementing sustainable practices, obtain real life case studies and provide recommendations on implementing a mentoring approach with other hotels in the Canary Islands and beyond.

Over a period of three years, Kuoni Group participated in a project promoting social and environmental improvements in Tunisia's hotel management. The aim of this project, which was supported by Switzerland’s State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), was to make the tourism industry generally more sustainable. Within the project, local consultants have been trained, who have then been advising hotels on sustainability issues. As a result, five hotels in Tunisia have undergone an external sustainability audit in the spring of 2015 according to the latest Travelife criteria.

In order to enhance sustainable tourism offers and practices in Morocco Kuoni Group has been engaged in a joint project with the German Development Cooperation (GIZ), TUI Travel PLC, Club Med and Lacon Maroc. The main objective of this cooperation was to raise awareness and create know-how of sustainable tourism practices in Morocco, while improving the quality and quantity of their implementation.

In 2014, five Kuoni Group hotel partners in Morocco have been supported by local and international experts in the development, implementation and improvement of their social and environmental practices. After successful completion of the project in 2016, hotels will be well prepared to achieve a Travelife award.
